MSP trooper hospitalized after suspected drunk driver slams into patrol car on I-94

MSP patrol car hit by suspected drunk driver on April 6, 2026.
Michigan State Police

ROMULUS (WWJ) A suspected drunk driver caused a crash that sent a Michigan State Police (MSP) trooper to the hospital, MSP said.

MSP said the crash happened on westbound I-94 near Merriman on Monday, April 6, around 1:10 a.m. Metro South troopers were investigating a two-car crash in the gore of the Collector Distributor Lane and Express Lanes of the freeway at the time.

Authorities said a trooper was sitting in her fully marked patrol car with emergency lights and spot lights activated. The driver of a 2013 Lincoln MKZ, traveling westbound, lost control and crashed into the driver side of the patrol car. The at-fault vehicle then spun out and slammed into two other vehicles. It came to rest in the middle lanes of travel on WB I-94.

Romulus Fire rescued the trooper from her patrol car. First responders took her to the hospital for "non-life-threatening injuries."

According to MSP, the 32-year-old Lincoln driver "showed signs of intoxication" and was taken to the hospital for a blood draw. The driver was then lodged.

No one else was injured. MSP will forward the investigation results to the Prosecutor's Office for review.

"We were extremely lucky that there were only minor injuries in this preventable crash," MSP First Lieutenant Mike Shaw said. "This crash serves as a reminder of two things. One, that if you see emergency vehicles on the side of the road, slow down and move over a lane. And two, there is never a reason to drive impaired. Ever."
