(WWJ) – Six years after Egypt Covington was found bound and murdered in her Van Buren Township home, three men have pleaded guilty for their roles in her death.
Covington was found shot to death execution style in June of 2017 — just days before her 28th birthday. Her hands were bound with Christmas lights.
The case, initially investigated by local police, was turned over to the Michigan State Police Second District's Special Investigation Section in 2020. Timothy Moore, Shandon Groom and Shane Evans were all arrested later that year.
MSP's lengthy investigation culminated Thursday with officials announcing all three men have all now pleaded guilty.
While Evans took a plea back in April, Moore and Groom pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in circuit court, MSP officials said on Thursday.
"The investigation has revealed that there are no other living persons that are responsible for her death," MSP officials said on Twitter. "SIS detectives are investigating one other possible suspect, however that suspect was shot and killed in another incident in Toledo, Ohio."
Authorities did not release the name of the fourth suspect or any details about their shooting death.
"It is through the persistent work of the Second District SIS detectives that Egypt's family can now have a small piece of closure," MSP officials tweeted.
Investigators learned Evans, from Sumpter Township, had alerted Moore and Groom of a residence in Van Buren Twp. that was said to have marijuana inside. He led them to a duplex to steal the marijuana, according to MSP.
But Moore and Groom entered Covington's residence instead of a neighboring residence that was supposed to have the marijuana, MSP officials said.
During the home invasion the men allegedly bound her with Christmas lights and fatally shot her, according to MSP.
Evans was arrested in 2020 in Sumpter Township, while the other men were arrested in Toledo.
