FRENCHTOWN TWP. (WWJ) — The search is on for a man and woman who allegedly stole money from a Monroe County fast food joint by using a “quick-change” scheme.
Michigan State Police troopers were called to the Chick-fil-A on Telegraph Road in Frenchtown Township Saturday night after employees learned they had been scammed.
MSP officials say the man and woman wearing facemasks walked in the restaurant shortly after 8 p.m. and placed an order. The man handed the employee cash to pay for the order and “engaged in a conversation with the employee, requesting he make change for various denominations of bills.”
The suspect used this tactic “as a distraction and means to confuse the employee,” according to MSP. He was then able to use sleight of hand and pocket money that belonged to the restaurant, MSP officials said.
The woman was watching the theft happen and later joined in on the scheme, according to police. She also allegedly pocketed money belonging to the restaurant.
Authorities did not say how much money the pair of suspects pocketed before leaving the restaurant.
After they got their food, the suspects left the restaurant and headed south on Telegraph in a gray or silver Ford Escape, according to MSP.
MSP officials are asking anyone who recognizes the suspects or their vehicle, or otherwise knows something about the crime, to call 734-242- 3500.
