DETROIT (WWJ) - Residents across Southeast Michigan are waking up to a heavy blanket of fog Tuesday morning and heavy downpours — all of which may cause hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility for much of the morning, meteorologists warn.
The National Weather Service has issued a Dense Fog Advisory in effect now through noon for Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, Wayne, Lenawee and Monroe counties.
Mix in the heavy rain showers expected in the area Tuesday morning, and experts warn roadways could become hazardous.
Meteorologists said visibility is estimated at one quarter mile or less in dense fog and rain showers. Drivers are urged to slow down, use your low beam headlights and leave plenty of distance in front of you.
"Rain showers also moving in from Indiana and Ohio will cross the area and combine with dense fog to further limit visibility during the morning travel rush," the NWS advised.
Experts said a warm front approaching much of the listening area on Tuesday is responsible for the widespread fog and rainy conditions. The Metro Detroit area could see anywhere from 0.25 to 1 inch of rain through the evening hours.
The rain is expected to continue for most of the day, into the overnight hours and through to Wednesday as the front slowly moves across the Great Lakes.
