HARPER WOODS (WWJ) -- A young man has been arrested after police say two people were shot at a Harper Woods home.
A public alert advised Harper Woods residents to expect a police presence and to avoid the area of Woodside Street between Kelly and Beaconsfield, Friday afternoon.
Reporting from the scene, WWJ Newsradio 950's Ryan Marshall said there was a SWAT team surrounding a house, in the 19000 block of Woodside, as police were in a standoff with an armed suspect.
Marshall said police were acting on initial reports that a 19-year-old had shot his mother in the home, and that the young man had barricaded himself inside with hostages.
"Now police and SWAT just a few minutes ago took someone out on a stretcher and placed in them in an ambulance," Marshall reported, just after 3 p.m.. "We don't know who it is, but residents believe it is the mother who in fact could have been shot."
A short time later, Harper Woods Police Chief Jason Hammerle told reporters that the Special Response Team (SRT) had entered the home and that officers were clearing the area.
A young man was taken in handcuffs to a squad car, Marshall said, while visibly laughing and reportedly spitting in an officer's face.
Hammerle told reporters that he can confirm that there are two victims in this shooting.
"He does not know the extent to their injuries right now," Marshall reported. "But what we were hearing on the street is that there were two potential fatalities in all of this."
Neighbors told Marshall that heard that the suspect had shot his stepfather and his mother, and that the shooter's grandparents were also in the house at the time.
Those details were not immediately confirmed by police, as the investigation continues.
