Teen Amish girl killed, brother seriously injured after siblings struck by vehicle while riding bikes in West Michigan

OCEANA COUNTY (WWJ) - Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to a serious crash in West Michigan that killed a teen girl and left her brother severely injured while they were out riding their bikes on Friday evening.

Michigan State Police identified the victims as siblings -- a 15-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy --- from the Amish Community.

According to troopers, the fatal crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, on Skeels Road in Oceana County, located south of Ludington.

Based on their preliminary investigation, an SUV driven by a 35-year-old woman was heading westbound on the road when it struck two children riding bikes who were also going west.

One of the bicyclists, identified only as a 15-year-old girl, was pronounced dead at the scene while a 17-year-old boy was rushed to a local hospital for serious injuries.

No other details about the incident were released, pending further investigation. It is unclear if speed, alcohol, drugs or other factors contributed to the crash.
