DETROIT (WWJ) – A 16-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly opening fire on two teenagers outside a Detroit school last month.

Detroit police were called to Henry Ford High School around 3:40 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 21 after a reported drive-by shooting outside the school.

When officers arrived they found one 16-year-old victim with a gunshot wound to the upper arm and another 16-year-old with gunshot wounds to his chest and lower leg. Both victims were taken to the hospital in temporary serious condition. Their conditions were not known Tuesday.

Both victims are students at Henry Ford.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office alleges the suspect, whose name has not been released, fired a handgun multiple times at the victims from inside a moving car.

The teen suspect has been charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder, two counts of discharge from a vehicle causing injury, and four counts of felony firearm.

A preliminary hearing was held Tuesday and the alleged shooter was remanded. The teen is not being charged as an adult defendant, but he has been adult designated, meaning that upon conviction an adult designation allows the judge to have the option of sentencing him as a juvenile, or as an adult, or to fashion a blended juvenile sentence with the option of imposing an adult sentence if the juvenile is not rehabilitated.

A preliminary examination has been scheduled for Dec. 14.

Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive in the shooting, though witnesses told WWJ’s Ryan Marshall the day of the shooting that it appeared to be a case of retaliation after one of the victims “spoke on someone’s dead relative.”

Police did not confirm whether it was a case of retaliation, but DPD Chief James White told reporters after the shooting the victim was being picked up from school by his grandmother when shots rang out. He also noted it was an isolated incident and no one at the school was in danger as a result of the shooting.
