DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit Police are searching for a trio of suspects after two young people were shot outside of a school on the city's northwest side.
Police responded to the scene, late Monday afternoon, at Henry Ford High School at 20000 Evergreen Rd., just south of 8 Mile Rd.
Witnesses told WWJ Newsradio 950 they heard gunfire, and saw a young man bloodied and lying on the ground.
Tiffany Butler, who lives nearby, was talking with her daughter when the shooting happened.
"We heard the gunshots, I told her drop low, we dropped low," Butler told WWJ's Ryan Marshall. "Talking to some of the students, they said that he (the young man who was shot) spoke on someone's dead relative...and I guess this was retaliation from that."
According to Detroit Police James White, a 16-year-old victim who was targeted was being picked up from school by his grandmother.
Just as he was getting into his grandma's car, the shooter opened fire from a vehicle, and the teen was shot at least twice.
The teen was taken to a hospital, along with a second wounded victim. Both of them — identified as students at the high school — were listed in temporary serious condition, White said.
The shooter, along with a couple of alleged accomplices, got away.
"We are looking for three African-American males, one is described as light-completed," the chief told reporters. "At least two of them were wearing masks; possibly all three are wearing masks."
There is no description of the suspect vehicle at this time.
"They circled this area a couple of times before they did the shooting, so we're working to get some video assets from some areas around here," White added. "We also may have a name on a suspect, but it is a juvenile, so I can't release the name."
White said the expected that police would hopefully be making an arrest very soon. He said police do not believe the public is at risk at this time.
"No one at this school is at risk, and we know who we're looking for," White said. "This appears to be an isolated incident. This has nothing to do with the school per se...but the conflict that these two groups are having."
As for whether this was indeed a case of retaliation, White said his investigators are looking into that information.
