ANN ARBOR (WWJ) -- A teenager has died after jumping off a bridge and into the Huron River in Ann Arbor on Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities said the teen was with other friends who jumped off the Amtrak bridge near Bandemer Park on Wednesday.

While most of the group made it to the Huron River's shore, one began to struggle in the water and had to be pulled to shore by a group of kayakers who overheard the commotion.

Rescue crews were called at approximately 2:27 p.m. to respond to the incident, WDIV reports.

CPR was performed and the teen was rushed to the University of Michigan Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition Wednesday night, before he died.

"Our understanding is that the patient had jumped in, came back up, went under and then stayed under," Ann Arbor fire chief Mike Kennedy told WDIV. "Some other people on the river not affiliated with the group heard the commotion and were able to remove the patient from the water."

The Ann Arbor Fire Department is telling people to never jump off any bridge into the Huron River -- noting that not only is this dangerous, but it's also illegal.

"The river has significant hidden debris, such as trees and very unpredictable and strong currents," said the department. "We strongly discourage anyone from swimming in the Huron River due to these hazards."

Kennedy said that the first responders were shocked that anyone would attempt to swim in the river since water temperatures were in the 40s.

"Our thoughts are with all of those impacted by today's incident," said the fire crew.
