DETROIT (WWJ) -- As thousands of people gathered in Detroit Detrol for the city's annual fireworks show Monday evening, a teenager was was shot by officers near Cadillac Square.
The incident unfolded at around 6:30 p.m., near Farmer and Bates, when police searched a 19-year-oldman's book bag that "was very heavy looking," according to Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison.
Inside the bag, Bettison said officers found a "conversion-type assault weapon."
During the investigation, Bettison said another teenager in the group ran away, officers chased him and there was a shooting.
"(An officer) fired multiple shots striking that young man. The individual struck by gunfire is approximately, or I'm being told, 18 years of age," the chief said.
Bettison said the teen who was shot was listed in critical condition at a local hospital.
The officer involved in the shooting is a member of the Department's gang squad.
Bettison offered this warning to people who attend the annual fireworks show, and other events in the city.
"It's not smart to bring guns downtown to the city of Detroit; it's just not a good idea," he said.
The investigation is ongoing.
