DETROIT (WWJ) – A family is searching for answers after a 19-year-old man was shot and killed at a New Year’s Eve party in Detroit.
Don Sawyer was killed just hours into the New Year after suspects pulled up to a party near East Warren Avenue and Outer Drive and fired multiple shots from the car, according to a report from WXYZ.
Two other people were shot, but are expected to recover.
Family members say Sawyer and his friends had just arrived at the party when shots rang out, according to WXYZ.
Sawyer’s aunt, Brittney McKinney, told WXYZ the teen “didn’t go out looking for trouble.”
“He was an innocent 19-year-old thinking he was going out for New Year's Eve," she said, according to the report.
Police have recovered two guns from a vehicle suspected to be involved in the shooting, but no arrests have been made.
Authorities have not released a description of the suspects or a possible motive in the shooting.
One of Sawyer’s friends at the party said people thought the gunshots were fireworks until they saw Sawyer had been shot.
Sawyer's family and friends gathered in Mount Clemens on Monday to hold a candlelight vigil and release balloons into the sky.
Anyone who knows something about the shooting should contact Detroit police.
The shooting was one of at least three in the early morning hours of New Year's Day, which left six people injured and one dead.
