FLAT ROCK (WWJ) -- Progress is being made in Flat Rock after a chemical leak displaced hundreds of residents from their homes.
City officials say the sewer system is considered back to normal operating conditions, and is now clear of the gasoline that was leaking from Ford Motor Co.’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant.
The latest update comes after two weeks of extensive jetting and flushing of the sanitary sewers in affected residential areas.
The leak -- which was detected on August 31 -- was causing elevated levels of benzene in the downriver community.
Flat Rock mayor Mark Hammond said in a recent address that it could still be a couple of weeks before the 1,100 families who were asked to evacuate can safely move back into their homes.
