CLARKSTON (WWJ) — Oakland County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a local middle school to investigate a threat Monday morning.
Authorities tell WWJ Newsradio 950 deputies were sent to Sashabaw Middle School — near Clintonville Road and I-75 — around 9 a.m. after a threatening text message was sent to 911 from inside the building.
The message said a friend of someone at the school had an “AK-49” inside the building, a spokesperson from the sheriff’s office said.
Officials with the school district said Sashabaw Middle School and North Sashabaw Elementary School were ordered to shelter in place “out of an abundance of caution.”
The person who sent the message was quickly identified and authorities determined there was no threat and the shelter-in-place orders were lifted. The school day went on as scheduled.
“As always, our students' and staff's safety and well-being are our top priority, and we will continue to take every situation seriously,” Clarkston Superintendent Dr. Shaw Ryan said in a letter to parents. “Please take this opportunity to remind your children of the importance of choosing their words wisely and to always report anything of concern to a trusted adult.”
The sheriff’s office says the incident remains under investigation. Officials have not said whether the student may face charges for the false threat.
