Threat forces closure of Mount Clemens High School a day after homecoming football game cancellation

MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ) -- Mount Clemens High School is closed today due to a reported threat that was made at the school.

At around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, Macomb County Sheriff’s deputies met with the Mount Clemens High School administration regarding the complaint.

It was reported that once school had been let out for the day on Thursday, a handwritten threat was discovered on a desk in a classroom.

The message read "School Shooting on Friday," and was believed to be in reference to Oct. 8.

After searching the building, authorities found a second similar message on a separate desk.

In a letter to parents, Superintendent Monique Beels says they do not believe that the threat is credible at this time, but have decided to postpone the school's Homecoming Tailgate event until next week.

The school's homecoming dance will proceed on Saturday as planned, though Beels notes that "security staff will be working overtime to ensure that this event is safe for all."

Students will not be allowed to bring backpacks into the dance, and the Macomb County Sheriff's Department will be present.

Law enforcement is continuing to investigate the threats.

The situation comes just one day after the announcement that the Mount Clemens Battling Bathers wouldn't be on the field Friday night against Potterville.

The high school has been forced to cancel the homecoming football game due to a lack of referees.

Students and families received a voicemail on Thursday notifying them of the cancellation.

Mount Clemens High School Principal Kirk Duncan says they are still working to find referees, and will even delay the game until Saturday if they are able to secure a crew.
