DETROIT (WWJ) A crash on an I-96 ramp on Detroit's west side left a toddler hospitalized.
Michigan State Police (MSP) said the three-car crash happened on Thursday, May 29, at 9:40 a.m. on the eastbound I-96 Local Lanes ramp to the Southfield Freeway. The Detroit Regional Communication Center was notified of an "injury crash involving a child."
Troopers responded and learned the driver of the at-fault vehicle was a 32-year-old Detroit woman with a three-year-old child in the backseat. The child was "thrown into the front windshield" during the crash, according to MSP.
The child was rushed to the hospital in undisclosed condition. No other "serious" injuries were reported.
No further information was released about the circumstances leading up to the crash. Police did not specify if the child was in a car seat or restrained in any way.
"Drivers are responsible for all the passengers in their vehicle," MSP First Lieutenant Mike Shaw said. "It is even more important to ensure that children are belted in to the proper child seat. Every trip, every time."
