ROSEVILLE (WWJ) -- How many car washes are too many car washes?
Leaders in two Macomb County communities are working to figure that out.
Tuesday night, the Roseville City Council voted to extend a moratorium on both car washes and gas stations in the city.
Roseville is currently home to 23 gas stations and 11 car washes in the city's nearly 10 square miles.
The moratorium was first approved in December and will now run for another six months, as council members review zoning requests and determine if there are too many car washes and gas stations clustered in certain areas.
Something similar in neighboring Warren
This comes after last week, the Warren City Council approved a brand new moratorium on new car washes and gas stations.
In Warren — where officials said there are 69 gas stations and 25 car washes — the moratorium will pause the permitting process for eight months while ordinances are being updated.
The moratorium does not impact businesses that have already received a permit or had their site plans approved, including two new car washes and a second Sheetz gas station.
Warren Councilman Jonathan Lafferty said the council is taking a responsible approach to the issue, seeking to "contain the sprawl and excessive proliferation of gas stations and car washes" in Warren.
