DETROIT (WWJ) -- Get the shovels and snow blowers ready! Metro Detroit is expected to bring more than a foot of snow throughout the region Wednesday and Thursday — likely breaking some records.

AccuWeather forecasters are now predicting 12-18 inches of accumulation for the bulk of the WWJ Newsradio 950 listening area, with a possibility of more snow to the south and lesser to the north.

The last time Detroit was hit with a snowfall within 12 to 18 inches was in 2015.

But no matter how much snow falls within the forecasted range, the storm is expected break into the top 10 recorded snowfalls since 1881. If it reaches 15 inches, it could make the top five.

According to the National Weather Service, the top 10 record snowfalls in Detroit's recorded history are:

1. April 6, 1886 -- 24.5 inches
2. December 1-2, 1974 -- 19.3 inches
3. February 1-2, 2015 -- 16.7 inches
4. March 4-5, 1900 -- 16.1 inches
5. February 28-March 1, 1900 -- 14 inches
6. December 18-19, 1929 -- 13.8 inches
7. February 12-13, 1894 -12.8 inches
8. February 19, 1908 -- 12.6 inches
9. January 31-February 1, 1881 -- 12.5 inches
10. February 9, 1911 -- 12.3 inches

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for most of Southeast Michigan, in effect from 7 a.m. Wednesday through 11 p.m. Thursday.

This "long-duration" storm will start out as rain on Tuesday night and will mix with sleet and snow before it turns into all snow around Wednesday afternoon -- continuing into Thursday, said DeVore.
