(WWJ) Another weekend, another round of freeway closures in Metro Detroit.
Drivers will want to plan ahead for the following scheduled construction projects (all information provided by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT):
- Southbound I-75 will close Friday (9/25) 9 p.m. from Springwells to Schaefer for the ongoing bridge maintenance project. Ramps in the area will close around three hours earlier, at 6 p.m.
- Then, the westbound I-96 Express and Local lanes will close in Detroit on Friday (9/25) at 7 p.m., until 5 p.m. on Saturday. MDOT will demolish the Fullerton bridge and work on the Hubbell bridge.
- Westbound I-94 will close at 5 a.m. Saturday (9/26) through 8 p.m. on Sunday. from Metro Parkway (16 Mile Road) to Gratiot Ave. This is for the ongoing resurfacing project.
Meanwhile, the long-term closure of eastbound I-696 remains in place, with no sign it will open ahead of schedule. In the latest updates, MDOT said that eastbound lanes are expected to finally reopen "by the end of the year." This phase two of the "Restore the Reuther" repaving project. When the westbound traffic (which is currently using the eastbound lanes) switches back to its side of the road, all of the ramps on westbound side of the freeway will also reopen, MDOT said.
But that won't be the end of it. In 2027, MDOT will focus on I-696 between I-75 and Dequindre Road.
