Traverse City woman arrested after allegedly assaulting father of her child, pulling out gun

TRAVERSE CITY (WWJ) -- A 23-year-old Traverse City woman is behind bars after she allegedly assaulted the father of her young child.

Michigan State Police say on Saturday, July 23, at approximately 10 p.m., troopers were called to a 911 hang-up and a possible domestic assault on Barlett Road in Acme Township.


Upon their arrival, troopers said they observed Makayla Phipps and a man on opposite sides of a car.

The victim said he was dropping off their child when Phipps became angry with him. He said that Phipps jumped in the backseat of his vehicle and began assaulting him while demanding money.

When the victim attempted to call 911, he said Phipps retrieved a handgun from the center console and demanded he hang up the phone.

Phipps was arrested and lodged in the Grand Traverse County Jail.

Phipps was arraigned in the 86th District Court in Grand Traverse County for one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, one count of interfering with electronic communication devices causing injury or death and domestic violence.

Her bond was set at $50,000. Her next scheduled court appearance is on August 5, at 9 a.m.
