REDFORD TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Two state troopers are being praised for their quick thinking after they saved the life of a man who said he wanted to jump from an I-96 overpass on Friday afternoon.
Michigan State Police said in a update to social media that troopers became aware of the incident after the man's wife called the Detroit Regional Communication Center (DRCC) just before 5 p.m.
She said her husband was on the Beech Daly overpass and was trying to jump onto the freeway.
MSP said multiple troopers and Redford police officers were dispatched to the area to find the man. With assistance of Michigan Department of Transportation cameras, he was spotted standing on the Fenton overpass in Redford.
Two troopers were the first to get to the scene and began talking to the man, MSP said. One trooper continued their conversation with him while the second trooper was able to position themselves in order to "quickly gain control of the man" if he tried to get over the guardrail, state police added.
The troopers were able to take the man into protective custody and he was taken to the hospital for treatment.
State police praised the heroic actions of the two troopers that officials said ultimately saved the man's life.
"Remember, you are never alone," MSP added. "Please reach out to friends, family, clergy or police."
