(WWJ) If you or your teen are on the hunt for a PlayStation 5 — listen up.
With this popular gift being out of stock everywhere, coupled with the desperation of well meaning parents, police warn: "It's a scammer's dream!"
Reaching out to the public on social media Monday, the Troy Police Department urged shoppers to be aware of people selling the new PlayStation or other popular items on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, eBay, etc. Sometimes you may just be buying the box, police say. Or worse, you may end up meeting up with someone that just wants to steal your money.
And look out if you're on the selling end, too.
Earlier this month, Troy police said two citizens selling PlayStation 5s were victimized by people posing as buyers. In one incident, which happened right in front of the Troy Police station, the victim agreed to sell a PS5 for $1,200 to the suspects. The suspect snatched the PS5 and took off, without paying the victim.
Police said the investigation of these "brazen thieves" is underway, adding, however, "...We are sure there are other scammers and thieves out there. Please use caution."
Troy Police say they will be out season providing extra patrol for all of the city's shopping areas.
Meanwhile, police urge everyone to keep the following shopping safety tips in mind:
1. Parking – Park in a well-lit and visible area. Be aware of your surroundings when approaching your car, and have keys ready.
2. Purses – Keep your purse or handbag zipped and in your control. Do not leave purses unattended, even for a minute, in shopping carts and dressing rooms.
3. Valuables – Do not leave valuables visible in your car, including shopping bags. Lock valuables in your trunk prior to arrival at your destination, as thieves may be monitoring parking lots.
4. Online Shopping – If you are expecting package deliveries to your home, make arrangements to have a neighbor pick them up when you're not home. If that's not possible, request delivery to a back door or other area not visible from the street.
5. Awareness – Be vigilant while shopping and minimize the number of bags you are carrying. If you feel you are being followed or watched, ask store employees to escort you to your car.
6. Selling or Buying Online from Individuals – If you are buying or selling on a site like Craigslist, please use extra caution and beware of scams. If you're meeting someone for a sale, meet in a public space.
