LINCOLN PARK (WWJ) - Two women were killed in a head on crash early Saturday morning.

According to a Tweet from the Michigan State Police Second District, the crash occurred at approximately 4:10 a.m. on southbound I-75 near Outer Drive in Lincoln Park.

Authorities said they were notified about a vehicle driving north in the southbound lanes in the area.

A 21-year-old Garden City woman in a Chevy Equinox was traveling north in the southbound lanes when she struck a Jeep head on in the left lane, according to the Tweet.

The driver of the Jeep was a 56-year-old Brownstown woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Garden City woman was transported to a local hospital where she later died.

Our traffic crash reconstructionist is investigating this crash,” F/Lt Mike Shaw said in the Tweet. “At this time we are not sure why the at fault driver entered the freeway the wrong way. We are waiting on autopsy results to see if impairment was a factor.”

The freeway was closed while authorities conducted their preliminary investigation. It has reopened and authorities say the families of both women have been notified of the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
