(WWJ) – Have you ever dialed 2-1-1? What is 2-1-1? How does it impact Metro Detroiters?

These are some of the questions the United Way for Southeastern Michigan is setting out to answer as it shines light on the helpline to aid families in need during 2-1-1 Awareness Month in February.

The United Way’s 2-1-1 helpline provides referrals to programs to assist with food, housing, financial assistance, utility assistance and more for those in times of crisis.

The program can get Michiganders in touch with more than 30,000 different statewide programs and services.

Every year, the United Way helps thousands of individuals and families in need. Over the last three years, the United Way says it has given nearly 80,000 referrals for food pantries, just under 70,000 referrals for electric service payment assistance, and more than 50,000 referrals for rent assistance programs.

The program also helps provide information on COVID-19 diagnostic testing sites and availability, as well as housing services, gas payments and more.
