NORTHFIELD TWP. (WWJ) -- A freeway overpass in Washtenaw County is shut down while crews asses the damage after an accident Monday night.
At around 8:30 p.m. on June 17, Michigan State Police say troopers from the Brighton Post responded to southbound US-23 about a crash at the Joy Road bridge.
MSP said troopers found that a 2023 International semi-truck driven by a Purvis, Mississippi man was head south on the freeway while hauling a backhoe on a flatbed trailer.
The boom of the backhoe struck the overpass, causing damage to the bridge, MSP said.
There were no injuries, and no other cars were involved.
The truck driver got a ticket for being over the height allowed on the freeway.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) closed the Joy Road overpass "indefinitely" while the damage to the bridge is being evaluated. It's not yet clear how long the repairs might take.
Drivers are advised to find an alternate route until the overpass can be safety reopened.
