MUSKEGON (WWJ) - Units from the United State Coast Guard were able to refloat and move a 700-foot dry cargo vessel after it ran aground and partially blocked the Muskegon Channel in West Michigan on Monday.

As assessment is ongoing to determine what caused the incident, the Coast Guard said in an update to social media, after the freighter, Kaye E. Barker, was safely moored in Muskegon.

According to officials, it is the second time in as many years that the 767-foot ship got stuck in the same waterway. The Kaye E. Barker ran aground previously on April 29, 2022 near the Muskegon Channel.

No injuries and no pollution were reported after the freighter got stuck on Monday afternoon. Roughly 400 feet of channel remained open while crews worked to free the ship.

According to the Coast Guard, no other vessels were affected.

Efforts to refloat the Kaye E. Barker paid off when cargo was removed during lightering operations in the evening hours. Officials are continuing to investigate the incident.
