(WWJ) A Royal Oak man is facing felony charges after allegedly hitting and killing a motorcyclist in Fraser, then fleeing the scene.
Edward Michael Nahhat, 64, was arraigned Wednesday in Roseville’s 39th District Court in connection with the death of 48-year-old Julie Fathbruckner, of Roseville.
Authorities allege that on the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 23, Fathbruckner was riding a 2005 Harley Davidson southbound on Utica Road near Mulvey Road when she was struck by a 2024 Ford F-150 driven by Nahhat.
Prosecutors say Nahhat fled the scene immediately after the crash.
First responders provided emergency aid to Fathbruckner, but she was later pronounced dead in the hospital.
Investigators tracked down Nahhat following a police investigation, during which officials allege he gave officers false and misleading information.
He has been charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment or death, lying to a police officer, and commission of a felony with a motor vehicle.
Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido noted these represent the maximum charges available under current law based on the gathered evidence.
“Any loss of life is tragic, and this case is a heartbreaking reminder of the responsibility we all have when we are involved in a traffic crash," Lucido said, in a statement. "Drivers are required to stop, remain at the scene, and take the necessary steps to help those involved. I extend my condolences to the family of the woman who lost her life in the collision."
A judge set Nahhat’s bond at $100,000, 10 percent. If released, Nahhat must wear a GPS tether, surrender his driver’s license, and refrain from using alcohol or drugs.
He is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause conference on Oct. 7, followed by a preliminary examination on Oct.14.
