DETROIT (WWJ) – It’s been three weeks since Metro Detroit has seen any rain, but relief appears to be on the way.

Sunday is expected to remain cloudy throughout the day, with rain showers and possibly a thunderstorm bringing the first rain since May 19 and 20, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Brian Thompson.

The rain is expected to continue into Sunday evening.

Thompson says that rain will be “very beneficial” in many areas, as most of the state has been at “extreme risk” for fires over the last couple weeks.

Last weekend a wildfire burned more than 2,400 acres near Grayling, while the rest of the state was on edge. Multiple fires were reported last week, including one sparked by a grill in someone’s backyard in Grand Rapids.

Thompson says Sunday night will be mostly cloudy and breezy with a low of 53 degrees.

We’ll likely see a breezy and cool start to the week, with a chance of rain showers persisting through Thursday, Thompson said.
