(WWJ) -- Before you ignite your Fourth of July firework display, be sure you’re following the law.
That’s the message from Michigan State Police, who have issued a warning that violating Michigan’s firework laws this weekend could lead to prison time and up to $10,000 in fines.
Fireworks are allowed from 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. now through July 4, and on personal property only.
Fireworks cannot be lit from public property, including streets, sidewalks and schools or churches.
It’s also illegal to use fireworks under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
If fireworks cause property damage, or injure or kill someone, you could be charged with a misdemeanor or felony, and could result in more than five years in prison.
Fireworks are not allowed on Monday, July 5.
As a courtesy, state police also recommend you speak with neighbors before lighting off fireworks, as they can trigger people with PTSD, as well as pets.
