WEST BLOOMFIELD (WWJ) -- Authorities are working to discover who posted a threat aimed at Oakland County's West Bloomfield Schools.

School district officials said all students will stay home and switch to remote learning for the rest of the week, until students are released for winter break, as West Bloomfield Police investigate a threat posted to social media that referenced the school buildings.

An alert put out to residents by police Monday morning said that "out of an abundance of caution," officers have been assigned extra patrols around the schools.

West Bloomfield Police Deputy Chief Curt Lawson said the school buildings were not evacuated, but students were dismissed early as police began their investigation.

Lawson said police do not believe that this is a credible threat, although the investigation is ongoing.

"We are in continued communication with West Bloomfield Administration and our detectives are actively investigating the information," police added, in a statement.

Lawson told WWJ Newsradio 950 that this is third school threat they've investigated since the Oxford High School shooting on Nov. 30.

"It's exhausting," Lawson said. "It's exhausting for all of us in law enforcement, school officials, parents that have to go and pick up their kids from school if school is let out early, or if school's not open for a day."

He added, "There's a lot of anxiety in our community, all over Oakland County, obviously, and through the state of Michigan...and it's very unfortunate."

After school activities in the districted are cancelled Monday night, but will continue as planned on Tuesday and for the remainder of the week.

Lawson said there is no suspect in custody at this time, but they have been interviewing students.

No further details about the threat have been released.
