DETROIT (WWJ) -- The Detroit Police Department has released photos of a man wanted in connection with a shooting on a city bus.

According to police, the shooting happened at 7:25 a.m. Wednesday on a Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) bus, along 8 Mile Road near Sherwood, on the city's northeast side.

Detroit Police Asst. Chief Charles Fitzgerald said one person was shot, and police are searching for a single shooter.

"What we know right now is that this individual stood up, walked toward this other individual, fired one time," Fitzgerald told reporters. "I know that some news outlets had reported already that we had multiple people shot; that is factually inaccurate. We had one person."

Fitzgerald said the wounded victim is a 24-year-old man, shot in the upper chest. He was taken to a local hospital in temporary serious condition, and is expected to survive.

It's still not clear at this time what led up to the shooting, or whether the suspect and the victim knew each other.

Fitzgerald said the suspect fled on foot and was then picked up by a passerby who dropped him off in the area of Mound Rd. and the Davison.

He is described as a heavy-set Black male in his mid-50s, wearing a black baseball cap and a white t-shirt. Police said his weapon and backpack have since been recovered.

This all came after a stabbing on a DDOT bus Tuesday evening, in what police said was a dispute between a rider and the driver.

This happened at around 6:15 p.m. in the area of 7 Mile Rd. and Gratiot Ave.

"That one appears to be an argument over the fare itself," Fitzgerald said. "And the individual that was turned away spat on the bus driver, and the bus driver in turn pulled out a knife and stabbed him."

Fitzgerald said that's just not the right way to resolve a conflict, adding: "Just let him get off the bus and go away."

He said the knife-wielding bus driver is expected to face charges.

Meanwhile, Fitzgerald said safety on DDOT buses is a priority for police. He said officers will be riding city buses for extra security in the wake of these incidents.

"You're going to see random bus boardings," he said. "We're gonna do our best not to delay anything. We're gonna get on, we're gonna ride for a bit, and get off. We gotta make sure it's safe."

Anyone who recognizes the shooting suspect, or has any information about his case is asked to call the DPD's 11th Precinct at 313-596-1140, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-Speak Up (800-773-2587). Tips may also be submitted via DetroitRewards.tv. The case number is: 2507020061.
