WARREN (WWJ) – Nearly 450 people have been arrested after a month-long crackdown on crime in Warren that officials are calling the "largest sweep" in the city's history.
Operation PACT – which stands for Preventing Acts of Community Tragedy – began at the end of May and resulted in 442 arrests, leading to 718 total charges, 393 of which were felonies.
Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer said the city wanted to be proactive going into the summer months to show residents the department won't tolerate crime.
Many of those arrested have previous convictions and faced additional charges of being a habitual offender or being a felon in possession of a gun, officials said.
Some of the criminals taken off the street were wanted for attempted murder, drug and weapons offenses, home invasion, armed robbery and criminal sexual conduct, according to Dwyer.
Misdemeanor charges against the arrested suspects include operating while intoxicated, possession of narcotics paraphernalia, reckless and careless driving, retail fraud and public intoxication.
Along with the arrests, officers also wrote more than 2,000 tickets for speeding, reckless driving and other traffic offenses.
The suspects – ranging in ages 18 to 79 – were from Warren and other neighboring cities across Metro Detroit, as well as Ohio and Illinois. Officials said 17 juveniles were also arrested.
In total, 68 guns and 73 vehicles were seized, while 24 stolen cars were recovered.
