ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WWJ) -- The University of Michigan Marching Band honored the heroes and the lives lost in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks during its halftime show Saturday night, featuring an elaborate and spectacular display of lights.
The show, entitled “We Remember” lasted 10 minutes as the Big House went completely dark during the Wolverines’ primetime win over Washington. Each of the marching band’s 400 members carried some type of light, ranging from high-powered flashlights, glowing orbs, illuminated umbrellas and more.
Director John Pasquale was a young teacher in Texas when the planes hit the towers two decades ago. He told WWJ earlier this week he hoped the musical tribute would help remind Americans how everyone came together during that devastating time.
“[It’s] a story of the strength and resiliency of America through a terrible tragedy,” he said.
The full performance can be seen on YouTube.
The music performed during the show included a "New York medley" of songs such as "New York State of Mind," "Empire State of Mind."
The Wolverines went on to win 31-10 to improve to 2-0 on the young season.
