DETROIT (WWJ) - Drivers on eastbound I-94 in Detroit be warned: a water-main break is causing extremely icy conditions during your morning commute WWJ's Charlie Langton reports.
"This is a pretty big break here on this water main and actually, crews are right in front of me now on I-94," Langton said from the scene at the Service Drive near the Chalmers exit.
Repair crews are attempting to fix the break, which has spewed water out onto the roadway since the line ruptured on Tuesday.
"The water was dripping down the exit ramp on eastbound I-94 at Chalmers, but because of the overnight freezing temperatures and the current temperature now -- it's about 28 or so degrees -- it completely froze."
The ramp was forced to close with maintenance crews and Michigan State Police on scene. Drivers are being told to avoid the area or drive with caution when traveling through due to the icy conditions.
Officials told Langton that repairs are expected to completed on Tuesday.
But the issue of the water on the road and sidewalks will remain before temperatures begin climbing above freezing or can be address with salt.
"It'll be on the south side of I-94 and it's actually pretty bad," Langton warned. "It's very, very icy over here, so just be careful."
