Williams had been in jail on a carjacking charge on Sept. 2, 2020 when Searcy was on-duty inspecting cells.

A violent struggle is said to have broken out between the two men at around 10 p.m., leading to Searcy’s death at the hands of Williams.

Facing a long list of charges from Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy -- including first-degree murder -- Williams took a plea deal for second-degree murder.

He also pleaded guilty to carjacking and felony firearm, receiving a concurrent sentenced of 15 to 30 years.

“The horrific murder of Corporal Bryant Searcy is a reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officials face every day,” Prosector Worthy said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to his family.”
