TAYLOR (WWJ) – A young homeowner in Taylor is figuring out his first steps after Sunday’s storms in Southeast Michigan brought down a tree on top of his house.
The 21-year-old, who wished to only be identified by his first name, Connor, tells WWJ he just bought his first home four months ago near Wick and Pelham.
He was sitting with his girlfriend and three dogs Sunday night when “out of nowhere, we felt the whole entire house shake.”
“And then we heard this really big thud,” he said. “We have three dogs and one cat. Our three dogs were with us in the room, but we didn’t know where the cat was. So my girlfriend went to go look for the cat and as soon as she stepped out into the hallway, she looked into the bathroom and she could see backyard.”
The tree divided the house, breaking through the roof, knocking down the bathroom wall, and breaking a hole in the bedroom and his furnace room.
Connor just turned 21, and now he's hoping he has a good insurance policy that can help him find a new place to live.
As of Monday afternoon, the tree was still on top of the house. After surveying the damage, Connor says doesn't know how his home can be saved.
“I’m no contractor, but for me, without us really being able to tarp the house until the tree gets taken down, with how much water is gonna be coming through it from last night and all of today… I’m thinking the water damage is gonna get into the floorboards, get into the beams and it’s gonna end up totalling the house,” he said.
Luckily, no one was injured in the ordeal and the missing cat was found safe. Connor is staying with his parents while he waits to find out what the insurance company is going to do next.
While no other homes in the neighborhood were damaged, others across Metro Detroit were dealing with downed trees and power outages following the storms.
