Man arrested for drunk driving after hitting boy biking to school in West Bloomfield

WEST BLOOMFIELD (WWJ) -- A man is under arrest and expected to face drunk driving charges after striking a young boy on his way to school in West Bloomfield.

West Bloomfield's Deputy Police Chief Curt Lawson says the accident happened Wednesday morning on Commerce Road in front of Keith Elementary School.

The 9-year-old-boy was biking across the crosswalk when he was hit by the car and thrown from his bike. He suffered a broken leg and road rash, and is currently being treated at a local hospital.

The driver claims he didn’t see the child, but Deputy Chief Lawson says the boy had the right-of-way in the situation.

Lawson tells WWJ that the driver was later taken to the hospital for a blood alcohol test and has since been taken into custody.

Charges against the man are pending and the investigation from West Bloomfield police is ongoing.
