BENTON HARBOR, MICH. (WWJ) A west Michigan woman died from injuries sustained during a house fire one day shy of her 67th birthday.

The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety said they received the call shortly before 2 p.m. Monday to the home on La Salle Street in Benton Harbor. When they arrived, they saw her husband outside trying to break down the back door.

mLive reports her husband was trying to get inside the one-story house but became "overwhelmed by smoke."

Firefighters located the woman inside, rescued her and attempted life-saving measures.

She regained a pulse, according to mLive.

Officials said she later died at a hospital in Kalamazoo where first responders had airlifted her.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Her name has not been released. She would have turned 67 today (Tuesday).
