(WWJ) – While another year has come and passed without the Detroit Lions making a trip to the Super Bowl, there will be plenty of excitement for local fans on Sunday night.
There are plenty of players on both teams with local ties to keep an eye on – including former Lions Darius Slay and Ndamukong Suh – and Rihanna is set to put on the halftime show.
But we all know about the “game outside the game” – the commercials. With advertisers spending upwards of $7 million for a spot during Sunday night’s broadcast, Cindy Thieme, a marketing and advertising expert from Oakland University's School of Business, says viewers can expect a lighter tone than the last few years.
“It’s an interesting slate of commercials this year. We’re definitely leaning into funny and there’s a lot of starpower,” Thieme said live on WWJ Sunday morning.
Thieme says among the best to watch for will be Workday’s 60-second spot featuring “throwback musicians.”
“If you’ve ever had to work in an office… there’s really something funny about that,” Thieme said.
As far as starpower goes, Thieme says some faces to keep an eye out for include Elton John, Sylvester Stallone, Steve Martin, John Travolta and Will Ferrell.
“Every commercial you look at, it feels like it’s starpower this year,” she said.
Thieme says many advertisers have already released their commercials online, and there’s a strategy to that.
“That’s what so many advertisers have been doing in the last few years, is doing a slow build and getting some excitement on it and then there’ll be campaigns with most of these spots because you do hope somebody remembers what it is,” she said.
The Super Bowl kicks off at 6:30 p.m. on Fox.
