(WWJ) – For many Michiganders, few brands are more iconic than the Elias Brothers’ Big Boy restaurants. They’ve been a staple of the Michigan dining scene for decades.
And even as the brand has dimmed a bit over time, just the thought of Big Boy is enough to conjure up nostalgia for many.
On a new Daily J podcast, WWJ’s Zach Clark takes a look back at how Big Boy came to be – as well as a look forward at what the restaurant chain is aiming to become as it works to adapt to the times.
Drawing from its roots in 1920s California, part of Big Boy’s plan moving forward is a concept called Bob’s, which have already started to open in some locations across Metro Detroit. It’s basically a fast-casual version of Big Boy, giving diners many of their favorite items from the past, as well as new options in an updated concept.
Big Boy is also looking to take a step back into the world of pop culture, partnering with Mr. Beast Burger and already making plans to appear in the next “Austin Powers” movie if and when it gets the green light.
The owners are even contemplating creating a TV show based on the brand as they plan their revival.
“There are so many different assets of this brand that most restaurant companies don’t have,” said Big Boy owner Tamer Afr.
