Metro Detroit expected to see frost this weekend — How far behind are the first snowflakes of the season?

(WWJ) – Things could get a little bit frosty in Southeast Michigan as we start to see some frigid overnight temperatures.

But don't worry, football fans, AccuWeather meteorologist Brian Thompson says it shouldn't be a worry for Saturday night's Michigan-Michigan State showdown in East Lansing.

"It is gonna be chilly on Saturday night but probably not cold enough or clear enough for frost. The main concern for that will be Sunday night," Thompson said on this week's Weather Wednesday segment.

While we've seen a handful of cold nights this fall, Thompson says "this could be the chilliest night we've seen so far," with temperatures in the mid-30s across Metro Detroit on Sunday night into Monday morning.

Some of the coldest spots could even dip below freezing, according to Thompson.

With frost in the forecast, does that mean our first snow of the season is close behind?

Not exactly, according to Thompson. He says early November could bring the possibility for snow, but through the rest of October, we could actually see some "warm spells."

"There will be some surges of warmth next week that should keep snow off the table through the rest of October, but there are some signs that there will be some chillier air moving in by early November and any time that happens in the month of November, it could be cold enough to get some snowflakes," Thompson said.

Thompson says the warm weather we saw earlier in the month – several days climbing into the 80s in early October – has put a bit of a delay on the changing of the leaves.

"Since then we've had quite a few chilly nights; that's helped things along. We're certainly running a little bit behind, but over the next week or two I think we'll see things change a little bit more," Thompson said.

As for any traveling Lions fans heading out to Baltimore for Sunday's game, things are looking pretty good — both football- and weather-wise, according to Thompson. The good news is it won't be particularly cold, with temps in the 60s, but there could be strong winds in the 20 mph range.
