ST. CLAIR SHORES (WWJ) -- Police are investigating whether drinking or drug use led to a crash that shut down a stretch of I-94 for hours in Macomb County on Thursday.

According to Michigan State Police, at around 11:50 a.m. on April 3, a 21-year-old driver with one passenger entered the eastbound freeway near 10 Mile Rd., near St. Clair Shores, while "driving at excessive speeds."

It's alleged, police said, that the driver then tried to squeeze between vehicles on the freeway before he crashed into a semi truck and then another car.

MSP said the crash caused large amounts of oil to spill from the semi, necessitating an extended closure of the eastbound freeway for cleanup.

Police said the driver and the passenger in the at-fault vehicle were injured and were taken to a hospital for treatment. Their is no word on how seriously they were hurt.

No one else involved in the crash was injured.

While searching the at-fault vehicle, MSP said troopers found several whippet canisters, as well as "open intoxicants," and suspected marijuana.

Calling this "another preventable crashed caused by risky driving behavior," MSP First LT. Mike Shaw said troopers are continuing to investigate the crash, and are awaiting a warrant for a blood draw to determine of impairment was a factor,

He said they're also working to confirm that the driver was involved in a hit and run crash earlier in the day.

The freeway remained closed as of 5 p.m. Stay with WWJ for updates, every 10 minutes on the 8s. >>LISTEN LIVE!!
