(WWJ) Gov. Gretchen Whitmer says Michigan is looking into whether drones could be used to help support communities, the economy and the environment in the state.

Whitmer's office announced Wednesday that Michigan and Ontario are teaming up to launch a "first-of-its kind technology initiative" involving the use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), also known as drones, for commercial purposes.

Several agencies across the international boarder will conduct studies surrounding the benefits of drone deployment. Agencies will also test how drones may transport medical supplies, essential deliveries and other services as needed.

Testing sites across southeast Michigan and Ontario have been proposed with the potential to expand to other prime locations.

"Considering the density of auto suppliers, logistic companies, technology start-ups, and consumers in the region, it is a natural fit to test this cutting-edge aerial technology here," said Whitmer, in media release.

The governor hopes these studies can help alleviate the growing supply chain and delivery issues currently plaguing the country.

Ontario is also excited about the ground-breaking venture.

"New and emerging transportation technologies offer enormous potential to improve the way we move people and goods," said Ontario Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney. "Ontario is a leader in connected and automated vehicle technologies, and working together with Michigan, we are taking important steps to explore how drones can be used to safely ship goods."

The state says Detroit-based drone tech start-up, Airspace Link, and their partners will provide a breakdown of potential impacts of drones on the environment, established aviation and surface transportation, zoning restrictions, other air traffic infrastructure and the ability to fly beyond the line of sight of a pilot.
