ROCHESTER, Mich. (WWJ) -- Michigan’s governor is working to ensure what she calls “critical state races” don’t get lost in the hyper-focus of the Presidential election.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is kicking of a "barnstorming" tour of the state, meeting Thursday with political candidates and small business owners in Rochester.

"We're getting all across the state talking about the issues that matter to Michiganders," Whitmer said. "We know that our voices are going to be outsized in this election as they are in every presidential."

"It's going to come down to a handful of states, and in the midst of all of that, we've got important, high level, crucial legislative races," Whitmer said. "That's why I'm here with these great legislative candidates."

WWJ Newsradio 950's Mike Campbell reports Whitmer is seeking to highlight campaigns for three House Democratic candidates: Shadia Martini for District 54, Travis Harrold for District 55, and Aisha Farooqi for 57.

One of the primary topics discussed: work to lower costs and support small businesses.

"You know, as important as the presidential is these races matter as well. In some ways when something is, is hitting you at home, your first call could be to a legislative office holder," Whitmer said.

"We've got three incredible candidates here, and so we wanted to really draw the focus in. because we know that all politics is local and the local leaders matter in profound ways to your everyday life."

Whitmer's next scheduled stop is in Woodhaven.
