(WWJ) Flags across Michigan will be flown at half-staff to honor and remember Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, who died Thursday at age 96.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's office announced that, in accordance with a proclamation issued by President Joe Biden and in recognition of the queen’s lifetime of service, the governor has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags within the State Capitol Complex and at cross all public buildings and grounds to be lowered to half-staff immediately on Sept. 8, until sunset on the queen's day of interment.
“Queen Elizabeth II lived through and shaped history during her nearly 70-year reign,” said Whitmer, in a statement. "My thoughts are with the royal family and the people of the United Kingdom.”
Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning British monarch, served her nation for seven decades. She lead the United Kingdom with grace, dedication, and grit and her legacy as a remarkable leader and unwavering public servant will be remembered by many.
Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments, and other organizations also are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff.
To lower flags to half-staff, flags should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The process is reversed before the flag is lowered for the day.
A notification will be issued on the date flags are to be returned to full-staff.
