On this first day of winter, we'll be seeing periods of rain mixed with heavy, wet snow at times ... But what does that mean for Christmas?

Mark Torregrossa, chief meteorologist for MLive, told WWJ that the local area should expect a rollercoaster of a week.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be mild days, with Wednesday's temperature rising up 50 degrees. "A strong cold front comes through Wednesday night and temperatures go down, and if you're not ready for that that's what the scream is like on the roller coaster," Torregrossa said.

As far as what to expect on Christmas Day, Torregrossa said it'll be cold, with temperatures in the 20s.

And there will be snow! Unknown yet is if it will accumulate to any significant degree, but the meteorologist said to expect anything from flurries to 1 to 2 inches of the white stuff for the holiday.

"We're going to get what I call an I-94, lake effect snow bath," Torregrossa said, adding it could be "decorative flurries" to up to 2 inches in some spots.

For the rest of the season, Torregrossa said to expect a "normal" winter, with slightly warmer temperatures than usual in the first couple of weeks of January. Other than that, Michiganders shouldn't expect anything too extreme in winter 2021.

The bad news is that today is the shortest day of the year, but by February things should return to having light again after 6 p.m.
