DETROIT (WWJ) -- Forecasters are warning metro Detroiters of potentially dangerous high winds and possible power outages on Sunday night as a strong low-pressure system moves into the area.

A wind advisory is in effect until at least midnight.

The National Weather Service in Detroit says "very gusty winds accompanying a cold front passage" will occur between 7 p.m. and midnight and into the early overnight hours across southeast Michigan.

Officials say the high winds could cause difficult driving conditions for high-profile vehicles, isolated power outages, damage to tree limbs -- especially those retaining foliage -- and damage to unsecured outdoor objects.

The NWS expects west winds of 20-30 mph will gust up to 40 mph across most of southeast Michigan and up to 45 mph near the Saginaw Bay shoreline.

On the west side of the state, areas near Lake Michigan were experiencing gusts as high as 55 mph and several power outages had already been reported, as of 6 p.m., according to the NWS in Grand Rapids.

The Mackinac Bridge was closed to all vehicles except passenger cars and vehicles on Sunday evening as winds topped 50 mph above the lakes.

Sunday night's high winds were proceeded by light rainfall throughout the day in most areas.

Forecasters are predicting a potentially troublesome week of holiday travel for some Michiganders. While metro Detroit isn't expected to see any accumulating snow for Thanksgiving, some areas in northern Michigan and the eastern part of the U.S. could get up to three inches.

Some flights may delayed due to high winds and some roads may be slick as rain is in the forecast.
