SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) — Old Man Winter isn't done with us yet — Meteorologists are warning Metro Detroiters to prepare for a wintery mix of rain, sleet, snow and freezing rain that will move into the area overnight.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through 10 a.m. Wednesday. The National Weather Service issued the advisory for Livingston, Oakland, Washtenaw, Wayne, Lenawee and Monroe Counties. A Winter Weather Advisory is also in effect from 2 a.m. until noon Wednesday for Macomb, Huron, Lapeer, Sanilac, Tuscola and St. Clair counties.
AccuWeather Meteorologist Dean Devore said a mixed precipitation is expected and may cause a potentially slippery Wednesday morning commute in the Metro Detroit area.
Devore said it will be colder than usual for the rest of the day with the highs reaching only 40 as sunny skies give way to clouds on Tuesday afternoon.
"Wintery mix of rain, sleet, and some freezing rain and even some snowflakes arrives towards midnight," Devore said.
Overnight temperatures are expected to hover around 30 degrees as precipitation moves into the Metro Detroit area; the area west of U-23 will experience "bursts" of snow and sleet around 8 p.m. before moving southwest and northeast across the Metro area.
The wintery mix is anticipated to changed over to freezing rain during the night and will continue into Wednesday morning, making a potential mess of untreated roadways and sidewalks.
The National Weather Service anticipates total snow and sleet accumulations of up to one inch and ice accumulations around one tenth of an inch; ground temperatures could remain below or at freezing and could create hazardous travel during the Wednesday morning commute.
Meteorologists warn drivers to take extra time when traveling and to drive carefully.
Devore said temperatures will begin to rise on Wednesday and thaw out most of the slick surfaces. Though temperatures will fluctuate some for the rest of the week, meteorologists forecast the warmer weather to stick around for the rest of the month into the first week of April.
