WMU student hit and killed by drunk driver; 22-year-old suspect in custody

KALAMAZOO (WWJ) – A young woman has died after being hit by a car early Saturday morning near the campus of Western Michigan University.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety announced that 21-year-old Kaylee Gansberg of Lisle, Illinois, was hit around 2:30 a.m. Saturday near W. Michigan Avenue and Howard Street.

Gansberg, who was a student at WMU, died later Saturday, according to a report from WOOD TV in Grand Rapids.

Officials said the driver involved in the crash had taken off, but was found a short time later.

The driver’s name has not been released, but was identified as a 22-year-old Kalamazoo resident. It was not clear if they were a student at the university.

Police determined the driver had been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash and the driver was arrested on related charges.
