MT. CLEMENS (WWJ) - A 28-year-old woman is in police custody after Macomb County deputies say she brutally attacked a young man with a broad blade as he was riding to work on his bike Friday morning.

Deputies said the incident occurred around 7 a.m. in the area of Church Street and NB Gratiot in Mt. Clemens. Police were dispatched to the area after receiving calls from witnesses who said a man had been struck by a woman wielding a machete-style weapon.

As authorities arrived at the scene, they found a 19-year-old man from Clinton Township with several lacerations.

"The male had been riding his bicycle to work when he was approached by a 28-year-old female out of Mt. Clemens who began assaulting him with a machete style weapon," deputies said in a prepared statement.

Witnesses who called in to 911 were able to provide an accurate description of the suspect, who was found on foot a few streets down from the alleged crime scene, the sheriff's office said.

The woman was searched and a broad blade was found discovered by authorities. The blade was concealed on her person and seized by police as evidence.

The 28-year-old woman was arrested without further incident.

According to the sheriff's office, the male victim was taken to the hospital and is being treated for non life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff's office said the incident remains under police investigation and no other details were released.

Information from the public is being sought by detectives -- at this time, the cause of the attack and if the victim and suspect know one another is unknown.

Tipsters have been asked to contact Detective Pascaretti at 586-783-8118.
