Woman arrested in connected to string of car break-ins at Southgate movie theater, urban park

A female suspect accused of committing a rash of vehicle thefts at various locations in Southgate was arrested and charged with the crimes last week, authorities announced.

SOUTHGATE (WWJ) - A female suspect accused of committing a rash of vehicle thefts at various locations in Southgate was arrested and charged with the crimes last week, authorities announced.

The Southgate Police Department said that resident Tiffany Casares was caught by detectives when they, along with the the department’s Special Operations Team, were doing surveillance around 6:30- p.m. at an MJR parking lot where a number of vehicle thefts had been reported on Aug. 1.

Police accused Casares of not only breaking into vehicles at the movie theater, but also at Market Center Park, 13361 Eureka Road, near the Southgate Shopping Center.

“As we become aware of problem crime areas, such as the recent rash of larceny from autos at MJR, we deploy our resources to address them,” police said in a social media post.

Casares recently had her arraignment at the 28th District Court in Southgate where she was charged with breaking and entering auto, stealing a financial transaction device, two counts of illegal use of financial transaction devices, larceny and possession of methamphetamine.

The judge gave her a $15,000/10% bond and if released, ordered she wear a GPS tether.

Recently, the department reported at least two instances where catalytic converters were swiped from vehicles in the at MJR Southgate Cinema 20, 15651 Trenton Road.

Public Safety Director Joseph Marsh said Casares is not suspected of being involved in those crimes.

“In the cases for which she was arrested, we found her breaking into unlocked vehicles and having nothing to do with catalytic converter thefts,” he told the News Herald.
